Worcester Bosch and tado: Will It Work, and Will Your Boiler Still Modulate?

tado can switch a Worcester Bosch boiler on and off, because Worcester accepts third-party controls on its 240-volt connection. We found nothing from tado or Worcester showing it can make the boiler modulate. Worcester's own account has said it does not use OpenTherm on any of its boilers. Its own controls modulate the boiler over a separate connection called EMS.

Checked on 22 October 2026. Updated 24 October 2026 with a section on boilers that have a built-in timer. Everything below comes from tado's and Worcester Bosch's own published material, linked at the end. We have not installed these products ourselves. Worcester's website was down for maintenance when we checked some pages, so recheck any detail that matters to you. Have a qualified heating engineer do the wiring.

The short answer

QuestionAnswerSource
Can tado control a Worcester Bosch boiler?Yes, as an on/off control on the boiler's 240-volt connectionWorcester FAQ; tado compatibility page
Will the boiler modulate with tado? Not that we can confirm. Worcester modulates over EMS, and we found no tado documentation on EMSWorcester; tado
Does Worcester Bosch use OpenTherm? No. Worcester's official account said in September 2020 that it does not use OpenTherm on any of its boilersWorcester Bosch on X
What does modulate a Worcester boiler?Worcester's own EMS controls, such as its Comfort range and smart controlsWorcester controls leaflet

Three ways a thermostat talks to a boiler

  • On/off (relay). The thermostat switches the boiler on or off. tado puts it plainly: in relay systems "the heating turns on (100%) or off (0%) completely".
  • OpenTherm. The thermostat tells the boiler what water temperature to run at. tado says tado X works with boilers that have a relay or an OpenTherm connection. Worcester has said it does not use OpenTherm.
  • EMS. Worcester's own two-wire connection. Its controls leaflet says its Wave control connects to the boiler's EMS BUS connections only. Worcester says this lets the boiler "modulate its performance" to meet demand.

What you give up with on/off control

Worcester describes load compensation as comparing the actual room temperature with the set temperature. The boiler then adjusts its flow temperature to match demand. An on/off thermostat cannot ask for that. The boiler runs at its set flow temperature until the thermostat switches it off. Neither tado nor Worcester publishes a savings figure we can quote, so treat any percentage in adverts with care.

Greenstar 4000, 8000 and older models

People search for tado with the Greenstar 4000, 8000 and older CDi and Ri boilers. Worcester's FAQ gives the rule that matters: third-party controls are fine "however the controls must be 240 volts". It also notes that some system and regular boilers need extra parts for Worcester's own controls, such as an internal diverter valve kit or a Greenstar wiring centre. Ask your installer which applies to your model.

Worcester's 2016 controls leaflet carries a warning about its Wave thermostat. It says the Wave must never be connected to the boiler's 230-volt connections. Low-voltage EMS controls and 240-volt switched controls use different terminals. This is exactly why the wiring is a job for a qualified engineer.

Greenstar boilers with a built-in timer

Many older Greenstar boilers have a timer in the front panel. It still controls the heating after tado is fitted. If it is set to timed, it can stop the boiler outside its own heating periods. tado then calls for heat and nothing happens.

Timer typeWhat Worcester documentsWhat to do with tado
Mechanical timeswitch (dial with tabs)Worcester's single-channel timeswitch instructions for CDi and i boilers list three settings: ON ("on all the time"), OFF and AUTOSet it to ON so tado decides when the heating runs
Older plug-in time clock (Worcester 230 boilers)A 1997 Worcester leaflet says ON "is an override which gives CH ON/off control to the thermostat only"Set it to ON
Digital or wireless programmer (for example DT20 RF)We found no Worcester guidance on using these with tadoAsk your installer. In one 2020 DIYnot thread, a Nest would not fire the boiler until an engineer disconnected the programmer

Worcester's MT10 timer instructions say the timer "should only be fitted by an approved installer". They also say it "must not be connected to the 230 V mains supply". Removing or disconnecting a built-in timer means taking the boiler case off. That is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Quick answers

  • Does tado work with Worcester Bosch? Yes, as an on/off control. Worcester accepts third-party 240-volt controls, and tado works with boilers that support relay connections.
  • How do I connect tado to a Worcester Bosch boiler? Through the boiler's 240-volt switched connection, using tado's installation instructions. Use a qualified heating engineer.
  • Can I use a wireless tado thermostat with a Worcester Bosch? tado's installer manual covers wireless set-ups, where the thermostat talks to a receiver wired to the boiler. The same on/off rule applies.
  • Is tado as good as Hive? We do not rank products. Both work as on/off controls on most boilers. Check each maker's compatibility page for your exact model.
  • My Worcester ignores tado. Why? Check the boiler's built-in timer first. If it is on a timed setting, it can block heating outside its own periods. Set it to ON.
  • Can a Worcester boiler work without a room thermostat? It can run from its built-in timer alone. Nothing then switches the heating off when rooms are warm enough.
  • How do I override a Worcester boiler timer? Set a mechanical timer to ON. Worcester's instructions describe this as "on all the time".

Before you buy: a four-point check

  1. Find your boiler model. It is on the data badge. Note whether it is a combi, system or regular boiler.
  2. Check for an existing Worcester control. A Comfort, Wave or smart Worcester control may already modulate your boiler over EMS. Replacing it with an on/off thermostat gives that up.
  3. Ask both makers in writing. Send your boiler model and system type to tado and to Worcester's technical support team. Keep the replies.
  4. Use a qualified heating engineer. Worcester warns against connecting its low-voltage controls to the mains-voltage terminals. Getting the terminals right is the installer's job.
