Viessmann Boilers and Smart Thermostats: Hive, Nest, tado and OpenTherm

Yes. Viessmann says most smart thermostats will work with its boilers. Its own ViCare thermostat typically works only with a Viessmann boiler. Here is what Viessmann's manuals say about wiring a third-party thermostat.

Yes. Viessmann says most smart thermostats will work with its boilers. Hive, Nest and tado can all switch a Viessmann boiler on and off.

What Viessmann says about smart thermostats

Viessmann's buyer's guide says "most smart thermostats will be compatible with your boiler". It says its own ViCare thermostat "will work only with a Viessmann boiler" in most cases. ViCare connects through Viessmann's Vitoconnect module, or directly on newer boilers with built-in WiFi.

The same guide says Hive "doesn't work with every boiler, and is generally made for gas or LPG systems". It says tado works with gas boilers, conventional boilers and heat pumps. It does not mention Nest.

How a thermostat connects to a Viessmann boiler

Viessmann's installation manual for the Vitodens 111-W says: "When connecting a Vitotrol 100 or an OpenTherm remote control, remove the jumper across L and 1." The jumper lets the boiler run without a room thermostat. A switched thermostat or an OpenTherm control replaces it.

Terminal names can differ on other Vitodens models, so your engineer should check your boiler's own manual. The boiler's wiring terminals carry mains voltage. This is a job for a qualified heating engineer.

Does my Viessmann boiler support OpenTherm?

Viessmann says a boiler "will require a pre-installed OpenTherm interface in order to be compatible". It adds that "most older boilers, therefore, won't work with OpenTherm". The Vitodens 111-W manual refers to connecting "an OpenTherm remote control", so that model has an OpenTherm connection.

Hive with a Viessmann boiler

Hive says "In most cases, our Hive thermostats will work just fine with your boiler". Its list of exceptions names solid fuel boilers and ten older Worcester Bosch models. No Viessmann model is on it. Hive's compatibility page does not mention OpenTherm. UK retailers list a Hive V4 OpenTherm thermostat for boilers that support it.

Nest with a Viessmann boiler

Google says the Nest Thermostat E and 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat support OpenTherm. Google's Heat Link guide names the OpenTherm wires OT1 and OT2. Google will not launch new Nest thermostats in Europe. Which? reported in May 2025 that current models stay on sale while supplies last and keep getting security updates.

tado with a Viessmann boiler

tado says it works with almost all boilers that support relay connections. It says tado X works with boilers that have a relay or OpenTherm connection. Ask tado about your exact model before you buy.
