Work VPN Not Connecting on Home Broadband? Virgin Media, Sky, BT and TalkTalk Checks
TalkTalk says it does not block VPNs. Most failures come from a home security filter or the router's Wi-Fi, so a work VPN that will not connect usually has a simple cause. Test on a wired connection and a phone hotspot first. Then turn off the parental or security filter for your provider. If it still fails, your employer's IT team needs to look.

A work VPN that will not connect at home usually fails because of a broadband security filter or the router's Wi-Fi, not a provider block.
Checked on 25 October 2026. Provider advice comes from TalkTalk's and Virgin Media's own pages. Sky and BT details come from their community forums and are labelled as user reports. We have not tested these fixes. Your employer's IT team has the final say on its VPN.
| Provider | What the provider or its users point to | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Virgin Media | Web Safe Child Safe may block some VPNs. Older Hubs may not support passthrough | Turn off Child Safe in your Virgin Media account |
| Sky | Broadband Shield's default 13 setting blocks anonymisers (user reports) | Check Broadband Shield, or switch it off to test |
| BT | Volunteers suggest BT Web Protect (user reports) | Turn off Web Protect to test |
| TalkTalk | TalkTalk says it does not block VPNs. HomeSafe Scam Protection can block remote desktop tools | Turn off HomeSafe to test |
Step 1: find out where the problem is
- Connect the laptop to your phone's hotspot. If the VPN connects, the cause is your home broadband. If not, it is the laptop or your employer's set-up.
- Plug the laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable. TalkTalk suggests this first. If wired works and Wi-Fi does not, the problem is the Wi-Fi.
- Restart the router and the laptop.
- Note the exact error message in your VPN app. Your IT team will ask for it.
Virgin Media
Virgin Media's own guide to VPNs says this (published May 2025):
- "Parental controls or broadband security settings may automatically block VPN access."
- Turn off Web Safe's Child Safe, which "may block some VPNs by default".
- "Older Virgin Media Hubs (like Super Hub 2) may not support VPN passthrough." Virgin says Hub 3 or older Hubs may be eligible for an upgrade.
- Firewalls may block the ports or protocols a VPN uses. Virgin names OpenVPN, L2TP and IKEv2.
On Virgin's community forum, volunteers say Virgin does not officially support VPNs. They suggest testing each Wi-Fi band on its own, because band switching can drop a VPN. Their most reliable fix is modem mode with your own router. Modem mode turns off the Hub's own Wi-Fi, so check with your IT team before you change it.
Sky
Sky's help page "VPNs and Sky Broadband" covers three problems: you cannot connect, websites or apps fail while connected, and the VPN slows you down. In its search snippet, Sky says the VPN "might be blocked by your work's security policy".
Volunteer Superusers on Sky's forum add two user reports:
- Broadband Shield: the default 13 age setting blocks "Anonymisers", which can catch VPNs. One user in October 2025 switched Shield off, and the VPN then connected.
- Sky WiFi Max hubs: volunteers link work VPN failures to the way these hubs handle connections. Sky's forum has threads on corporate VPNs failing on the Max hub. If you have one, ask Sky and your IT team.
BT
We could not find a BT help page about work VPNs. BT's community forum is full of work VPN threads. Volunteers there most often suggest turning off BT Web Protect to test. BT describes its security tools as protection from threats while you browse. Turn Web Protect back on once you know whether it is the cause.
TalkTalk
TalkTalk's help page "Using a VPN" is the clearest of the four providers. It says "we do not stop access to VPNs". Its first advice is to talk to your IT department. Its checks:
- Connect with an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi.
- If wired works, split the router's Wi-Fi network names (SSID) and retest.
- Make sure the router is in the main phone socket.
- Factory reset the router.
For remote desktop tools such as TeamViewer, TalkTalk says Scam Protection can block them. To turn HomeSafe off, log into My Account and select Networks & Connections. Then select View HomeSafe settings and choose OFF.
When it is your employer, not your broadband
If the VPN fails on a phone hotspot too, the broadband is not the cause. Common causes are an expired password or certificate, or a laptop that needs updates. Your employer may also only allow connections from certain places. Only your IT team can fix these. Never install a different VPN on a work laptop to get round a block.
Quick answers
Does Virgin Media block VPNs?
- Not as a rule. Virgin says parental controls and security settings may block VPN access, and older Hubs may not support passthrough.
Can I use a VPN with my Virgin Media router?
- Yes. Turn off Web Safe Child Safe if a VPN will not connect. On a Super Hub 2 or Hub 3, Virgin says an upgrade may help.
Is Sky blocking VPNs?
- Sky says a VPN "might be blocked by your work's security policy". Users report that Broadband Shield's default setting can block VPN-related traffic.
Is BT Broadband blocking VPNs?
- BT does not publish that it blocks VPNs. Users on BT's forum most often report BT Web Protect as the cause.
How do I stop a router from blocking a VPN?
- Turn off your provider's parental or security filter first. Then test wired, and on a phone hotspot. Change router settings such as modem mode only after checking with your IT team.
