Repayments are calculated as 9% (6% for Postgraduate Loans) of your income above the relevant threshold, deducted automatically through PAYE if you're employed. If you have both an undergraduate plan and a Postgraduate Loan, they're repaid at the same time, each calculated independently against your income.
UK student loan repayment thresholds for 2026/27
Your repayment plan depends on when and where you started your course. Plan 1 applies to most people who started an undergraduate course before September 2012 in England and Wales, or who studied in Northern Ireland. Plan 2 covers undergraduates who started between September 2012 and July 2023 in England and Wales. Plan 4 applies to Scottish students, and Plan 5 to those who started their course from August 2023 onwards in England. Postgraduate Loans are repaid separately and at the same time as any undergraduate loan you may also have.
Repayments are calculated as a fixed percentage of your income above the relevant threshold, not on your total income — so if you earn just above the threshold, only the amount over it is used to calculate your repayment. Repayments are automatically deducted through PAYE if you're employed, or calculated through Self Assessment if you're self-employed.
